Meet Tiffany Phung

Born and raised in Olympia, Tiffany Phung graduated from WWU in 2020, majoring in marketing and international business. She currently works at Eddie Bauer specializing in brand marketing, content, and social media, focusing on activating emerging platforms like TikTok and Instagram reels. She is planning to activate influencer marketing this upcoming spring season.

“One of the best places to build your network when you’re just starting your career is your university’s alumni program."

Tiffany says that while the program aided her in building connections across various industries with her former classmates, she has enjoyed giving back to the community where it all started! In her senior year, Tiffany participated in being an  SMA (Student Marketing Association) officer.

“Being in leadership in SMA has been one of my favorite experiences at Western. The friendships I made within our team are still friendships I keep today.”

Daniel Purdy

Join us as we spill the tea with Dan about the latest trends and insight in the marketing industry.

"How can someone in the marketing field effectively identify and target their ideal customer demographic for a new product or service?"

It is incredibly difficult because access to rich data often requires payment. If you start in a big marketing agency or company you will often have access to incredibly rich data which is easier to understand. However, if you are trying to start your own business/brand or work in a small business you will not have access to the same resources, therefore you need to improvise. If I worked in a small business I would begin with setting up a small workstation where I could eyeball everybody who came in. I would start by developing a profile of each the customers who would visit my small business, and I'm observing from a distance, things like age and gender. It is also crucial to observe differences between people who contribute to your business and people who leave.

It is also important to understand their reasons for purchasing your product. You need to observe and communicate with your customers about what they are looking for and why they are looking for a particular product, and if they do not answer that's fine, but you can add this information to your customer profile to further nurture your marketing objectives.

You can also access public, open-source data such as Census Data and Pew Research data. With the right research, you can develop a lot of information and identify consumer trends.

Event Recap

Marketing Case Competition

On February 23, the Marketing program hosted the biggest Marketing Case Competition we have ever had!

We want to thank New Engen and one of the judges, Makenna Schumacher, for developing this case and sponsoring the event, and all of the judges who took their time to participate in this event. Thank you to all the teams who participated! The case competition was truly a great experience, with great ideas flowing from all the participants involved. We would also like to congratulate our very own marketing team, Kaitlin Simpson, Justin Casper, and Gavin Bohling, for winning the case competition!!

Look out for the Viking Network on WWU Marketing Program LinkedIn for a detailed recap on the Case Competition!

One of the case competition judges and a Western Alumni, Joel Solomon who is currently a content design leader at Meta believes by participating in the case competition like judging is a great way for alumni to get engaged with the program.

"It was a lot of fun for me to see the great work everyone had done and I got to meet a lot of outstanding students. I've done Q&As and guest presentations before, but this was probably the most engaging experience I've had as a alumni. I'd absolutely do it again, if given the chance, and recommend other alumni give it a shot!"
