Marketing by the Minute: After Class is a student-led podcast produced by the Western Washington University Marketing Program. This season will consist of 3 episodes featuring special guests from early, mid, and late career WWU Marketing alumni in order to explore the different stages and experiences a marketing student may go through after they graduate and start their careers. The goal of this podcast is to connect alumni back to WWU in hopes of inspiring current students in the marketing program. Tune in the explore the different stages of being a marketing alumni!

Amelia Cook ‘07

Cofounder of Goodwinds Composites

In this episode, Amelia Cook, a 2007 Western Washington University graduate, shares her story on becoming co-owner of Goodwinds Composites, a carbon and fiberglass manufacturer based in Mount Vernon, Washington. Amelia has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Honors History from Whitman College and a Masters in Business Administration from Western Washington University. Following jobs in the tourism and business development sectors, Amelia joined forces with her brother to found Goodwinds Composites in 2008. Goodwinds Composites serves a variety of  industries, including aerospace, musical instruments, industrial equipment manufacturers, and sporting goods with structural composite rods and tubes and composites machining. In 2021, Goodwinds Composites products made it all the way to Mars as the landing gear on NASA’s Ingenuity Helicopter.

Kurt Hartmaier '04

Cofounder of the Blue Room

In this episode, Kurt Hartmaier, a 2004 Western Washington University graduate, shares his career journey to opening The Blue Abode Bar with his wife Katy. Kurt started out his career working for a running shoes company to pay homage to his other passion at the time, running, where he was a company sponsored athlete. He then joined Farmers Insurance for a while as an agent and later worked at RacerMate Inc. in sales and technical support. After these few jobs Kurt decided to go into bartending and restaurant management for a few years until he decided to combine his current role with his Marketing experience, and open The Blue Abode Bar. Kurt is the testament to the idea that interests and career changes happen, and are normal. His advice for soon-to-be graduates is to find your passion first because you can always combine your marketing degree with your passions. It also helps to have a wonderful partner alongside you.

Ben Hodson '21

Cofounder of The Blue Room

In this episode, Ben Hodson, a 2021 Western Washington University graduate, shares his journey toward becoming one of the cofounders of The Blue Room, while working for IAJ Media as their social media manager. Ben has a background in music and art, his goal was to connect these passions with his major, Marketing, to create a space that reconnected and revived the art community as society opens back up. Throughout the podcast Ben talks about his journey of opening The Blue Room in a time of risk within the economy, yet he explains to current students that now is the time to take risks. Ben says that there is no time like the present to take risks, take them when you are young. You can always get another job, but if you never dive in, you’ll never know what could happen. Ben, being such a recent graduate, shows current students that there is so much potential after graduation to combine the skills you have learned with your passions and potentially do something you really love.

Nick Weaver '15

Product Owner and Business Analyst, Customer Systems

In this episode, Nick Weaver, a 2015 Western Washington University graduate, shares his journey toward becoming a Product Owner and Business Analyst of Customer Systems at the financial technology company, InDebted. Nick had a background in business and a focus on digital marketing when he started pursuing his degree from WWU. His drive for learning relevant skills and embracing new technology resulted in earning his first job and led to the pivotal moment when he was offered his current position. Nick says he broke barriers in the FinTech realm using knowledge he acquired from the WWU Marketing Department. His advice for potential and current marketing students is to retain what they learn in college and try new things, even allowing themselves to fail, so they can continue growing throughout their career. Nick is currently working on updating communication systems for InDebted by finding solutions that will unify the company’s global communication strategy. Nick’s story is an excellent reminder that when we take advantage of every opportunity and push ourselves to continue growing at every level, we can enjoy a career full of meaning and excitement.
