Welcome to Fall, 2023!

Fall is always an energizing time of renewal for us and we are thrilled to be back. We have so much great stuff planned for the year and are excited to be working with our students to fulfill our mission of inclusive excellence in marketing education.

We already have several exciting student events planned for the next few months, including:

  • The SMA/MAB reception, immediately following our fall meeting;
  • Our second annual WWU Marketing Career Launch event, hosted by Chris Copacino at the Copacino & Fujikado offices in Seattle;
  • The winter WWU Marketing Case Competition, which is again sponsored by New Engen

We are especially looking forward to the 2023 WWU Marketing Holiday Mixer, which will be on December 1 in Seattle (so mark your calendars). We always look forward to the mixer – it’s a wonderful time to get together with our alumni and celebrate. We truly love seeing you and catching up in a festive atmosphere. I hope you all can make it but remember that we always love hearing from you even if you can’t make it. Please feel free to drop me an email or ping me on LinkedIn whenever you can.

Thanks to our dedicated faculty, staff, students, and alumni, WWU Marketing program continues to grow and improve. This is the second year of our Professional and Career Readiness (PCR) program, and PCR Director Morgan Widden continues to provide valuable guidance to our students as they get ready for what comes next after college.

    How do you believe WWU's marketing program helped shape your growth as a marketer?

    "Dan's class is so separated from the others for me. Specifically, Dan's IMC class was so impactful for me in learning the creative brief and how to build a brand that way, I was in class with my gears just turning, I was thinking about my business, my photography, and how I could build my brand. I think being in the class and even in the beginning stages of IMC where you are drawing out pictures and all the systems, that's what got my gears turning and made me realize that's what I wanted to do, it was so cool. It's literally what's going on all around the world with every company, and it's all so creative too. You learn the processes and everything that goes into it. That's what was the biggest inspiration or light switch that made me realize this is what I wanted to do."

    For your portfolio, and your website, did you use that professionally to show off your photography skills?

    "Well it was funny, I already had a website before Western for my photography. The IMC one had a different layout, I couldn't just put my photos in there. I positioned my website around photography during IMC because that's what I wanted to do because I wanted to promote my business. I also have a section with my podcasts and all my creative briefs. It was all there for a little bit and kept all that up for a while. But I decided to switch it completely to full photography after I got a job. I felt my resume would be enough of a showcase of my marketing experience. Now it's all photography."

      Student Spotlight:

      Irie Mock

      "When I first began at WWU I was unsure of my major but decided business would be the best path for me as I figured there was a vast array of jobs I could do with it. I decided on marketing as I feel a lot of connections within it to being more creative and I enjoy being able to incorporate that side of myself. The most impactful class thus far in the program was MKTG 381, this class made me discover my appreciation for statistics. I have always loved math but up until this point struggled the most in statistics as I found the concepts very abstract with less clear formulas and steps. Within this class and the countless group projects, I was fully immersed in the subject and rather than simply getting the answer and analyzing the data I was forced to grasp the concepts and know the what and why of the steps I was taking.

      Photo of Student Irie Mock in front of brick pathway and stairs.

      I credit this to both the professor (Dan Purdy) and the group I was in. By completing the work in a group setting we often bounce ideas and topics off one another, I am a very social person, and explaining topics to someone else helps me better grasp them myself."
