We’ve entered an unprecedented time in global history. This isn’t the first time a pandemic has hit; however, it is the first time we’ve had to deal with something of this magnitude since the economy globalized. The global economy is at a standstill, and consumers aren’t buying anything besides the necessities (plus or minus a few bottles of alcohol). Further, the abrupt stop in the flow of money has caused the US to lose 6.6 million jobs (4.2% of the entire workforce) in the last week alone.

Scholars Week 2020 Goes Virtual

Western will celebrate Scholars Week, an annual campus event showcasing the best of student scholarship, as an online event this year for the first time.

An online gallery will feature a virtual poster session of outstanding scholarly research and creative works by Western students. The event is intended to honor student success while reaffirming the university’s commitment to academic achievement despite the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Career Services Center to hold virtual employer meetups in place of annual Spring Career Fair

With so many students off campus and social distancing rules in place, Western’s Career Services Center (CSC) will hold three virtual employer meetups instead of the Spring Career Fair to connect students with employers and recruiters remotely.

Jenny Spurgin, CSC assistant director, said this decision is meant to keep health and safety as a top priority while also being beneficial for students.

WWU Institute for Energy Studies to Host Online ‘Carbon Hackathon’ April 21

Western Washington University’s Institute for Energy Studies will host a “Carbon Hackathon” from 3-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21.

WWU Student Schantell Hummel Receives DECA Association Leadership Award

The collegiate DECA Association Leadership Award is only given to six students nationwide, and this year, one of the recipients is Western Washington University student and president of WWU’s DECA club, Schantell Hummel, a business management major from Renton.

The Association Leadership Award recognizes collegiate DECA student members for their leadership. Hummel was nominated by collegiate DECA director Kyle Barber for outstanding leadership as the event manager for the 2020 Pacific Career Development Conference at WWU.
