Marketing Advisory

On Friday, November 3rd students had the opportunity to meet and mingle with the Marketing Program’s Advisory Board following their quarterly board meeting.  The board meeting was followed with a reception for marketing program students to meet these marketing industry leaders in an informal setting. Students were able to socialize and meet members of the board.

Much of the event was focused on discussing with current students regarding the marketing program, and marketing electives/classes. Topics included potential additions or adjustments to marketing classes and doing more hands-on practice for the workplace. Members of the advisory board were interested in what students had to say about the marketing classes, which ones they particularly enjoyed, and any other potential classes that could be taught that would interest the students.

    Giving Thanks

    Hi all,

Welcome back to Marketing Connect Volume 2. In this issue, we’re celebrating gratitude. We’re extremely thankful for the wonderful progress we’ve made in fostering a diverse and inclusive Marketing program, which remains a top priority. We will continue to work hard to improve in this area by amplifying the voices of underrepresented students, engaging with, and highlighting the success of our alumni of diverse backgrounds, and offering additional support to all of our students in need.

We are incredibly proud to have offered Give Day scholarships to every single first-generation Marketing student who applied.  With an eye to the future, we continue to engage with area high schools that serve students from underrepresented and marginalized communities.

We recognize that many dimensions of diversity are not visible, obvious, or captured in institutional metrics.  This does not make them any less important, and we hope to keep doing better for our students, alumni, and friends who may not always feel seen, understood, accepted, or accommodated.

    In Gratitude,

    Ed Love

    Alumni Spotlight:

    Chaya (Haley) Cable

Chaya graduated in Winter 2020. Since graduating, Chaya has worked briefly as a Social Media Manager at Artivem Mead Co. and is now currently working at Jewish Family Service as a Marketing and Communications Coordinator. Connect with Chaya!

Can you describe your professional marketing career?

"I am currently employed at Jewish Family Service (JFS) in Seattle, WA. This historic organization, founded 131 years ago by a group of local Jewish women, has evolved to encompass a wide range of programs, including Refugee & Immigrant Services, Care for Holocaust Survivors, Polack Food Bank, Emergency Financial Assistance, Services for Older Adults & Caregivers, Support for People with Cognitive Disabilities, Domestic Violence Support, Mental Health Resources, and Jewish Learning & Community Engagement. Our mission is to serve not only the Jewish community but also the broader Puget Sound region, assisting individuals in achieving well-being, health, and stability. Before joining JFS, I briefly held a part-time position as the Social Media Manager at Artivem Mead Co. in Bellingham. During college, I had the opportunity to intern with the Bellingham Bells and the WWU Alumni Association, both of which involved social media-related responsibilities. Additionally, I briefly worked in sales at a boutique called Sojourn on Railroad during my college years. Currently, I also work part-time as a Kindergarten Hebrew school teacher at Congregation Beth Shalom."

How do you believe WWU's Marketing Program helped shape your growth as a marketer?

"The marketing department at WWU played a pivotal role in shaping my development as a marketer. The professors in the marketing department were not only welcoming but also succeeded in creating an environment that made me genuinely excited to attend classes. Some of my favorite courses included Sports Marketing, Brand Management, Digital Marketing, and Consumer Behavior. I must mention my advisor, Cat Armstrong-Soule, who was instrumental in guiding me through my internships and ensuring I stayed on track to graduate early. One unique aspect of the marketing program, which was particularly valuable to me, was its emphasis on securing internships. Finding internships during college can be challenging, but the weekly emails from Cat, filled with internship opportunities, made this process more approachable. I credit the internships I obtained through Cat as the most significant factor that made me a competitive candidate for my current position at JFS.

What is your favorite Thanksgiving dessert?

"A basic answer would be pumpkin pie but it has to have a giant scoop of Cool Whip on top, otherwise I won't eat it. My mom owns a bakery so it would have to be her pumpkin pie specifically. Not a dessert, but she also makes really good garlic rolls that I can eat like candy so it's basically a dessert for me."

      Student Spotlight: Julia Greene

Julia is a fifth-year student graduating this quarter with a degree in Marketing and a minor in Business Analytics.

“I joined the marketing program towards the end of my third year after exploring quite a few options and switching around a lot. I ended up with this combo as I felt it combined my passions for people and problem-solving in a way that allowed me to be creative as well. I have found value in all of my classes, and they have all positively impacted me in various aspects of my professional development, so there is not one most impactful marketing class I have taken.

Not only have the classes been fantastic, but the people are even more awesome! Going to Network Nights and spending hours with my friends working on group projects have made me feel as if this program is truly a community. Outside of working on classes, I am often rock climbing, doing yoga, running, or reading!”
