2022 SMA Case Competition

Professor Ed Love speaks to group of students

What is the SMA Case Comp?

The annual SMA Case Competition gives students the opportunity to develop a solution to a problem outlined in a case, and present the solution to a panel of judges from companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, New Engen, WWU faculty, and other local and Seattle area marketing firms.

The Case Comp is put together by the Student Marketing Association, ran by the students for the students. There is a preliminary round where all students present with a select group of judges, and then 3 teams move on to the final round. These final 3 teams then present to the judges and a live audience before a winner is chosen.

2022 marked the 10th annual Case Competition and the 2nd year that it was held virtually. There were 32 competitors and 17 judges. After the preliminary rounds held on Friday, all competitors and volunteers were able to network at the Meet The Professionals event, which had over 20+ industry professionals! This is an added benefit of competing in the Case Comp, as well that this year students were able to participate in a FREE professional headshot event.

On Saturday was the final round. This was a live event where family and friends could watch their students compete and cheer them on! During deliberation, voting took place for the People’s Choice Award. The People’s Choice Award gives the audience a chance to show recognition to which team they think did an outstanding job.

The winners for the 2022 Annual SMA Case Competition are as follows:

“The judges were so impressed with the level of analysis and presentation skills across the board, there was heated debate in both the preliminary rounds and the finals in the deliberations.” - Cat Armstrong Soule, SMA Faculty Advisor

The prizes for winners included cash prizes for the top 3 teams and the People’s Choice Award winners, as well as a luncheon with New Engen executives for the 1st place team. However, New Engen was so impressed with this years presentations that they invited the 2nd place team to a luncheon as well!
