Accounting, 2020

Share your career journey and where you are now:

I graduated in 2020 with a degree in accounting and moved to Omaha, Nebraska to begin my career. My first role was as an Accounting Assistant at a small urgent pet care company, where I worked for two years. In this position, I supported key accounting functions such as accounts payable processing, transaction coding, reconciliations, and maintaining accurate financial records. Because the organization was small, I had broad visibility into how financial data supported operations, budgeting, and decision-making. After two years, I transitioned into a corporate accounting role to evaluate working in a larger organizational structure. This environment emphasized standardized processes, layered approvals, and more specialized responsibilities. While technically efficient, I found that the work was more segmented and less connected to the broader mission of the organization. After four months, I determined that a large corporate environment was not the best fit for how I prefer to work. Following this experience, I joined a small organization of about ten employees that works closely with the Catholic Church, supporting the spiritual formation of priests. In this role, I contribute to financial stewardship through budgeting support, financial tracking, and responsible management of funds tied directly to program activities. This position aligns well with my strengths in accountability, analytical work, and mission-driven operations.

What is your favorite CBE Memory

One of my favorite memories from the WWU College of Business and Economics was taking a class with Dawna Drum. What stood out most was how practical the course was. Instead of focusing only on theory, the class emphasized skills we could apply directly in real business and accounting situations. Many assignments reflected real-world scenarios, which helped me better understand how financial information is used in organizations. That experience made the material more engaging and gave me confidence as I prepared to start my career. Looking back, the class played an important role in helping me transition from college into professional accounting work.
