Initially I left Bellingham to work for the state legislature, in the transportation and energy areas. In 1982 I launched a Consulting practice in utility regulation and planning. I retired from that career in 2020. I remain in Olympia, and am still active in the energy field.

It was the day I was offered a job in Olympia. I was a graduate teaching assistant at the time and had just started for sections of economics 201. But I received the job offer I was looking for. I walked into department chairman Pete Harder's office unannounced. With great trepidation I told him that I wanted to disappear on short notice to Olympia. I felt I had made a commitment to teach that quarter, and was walking out on that commitment. He looked at me and said" our purpose is to help you get to the career that you want. If this is it pack your bags and get out of here; we'll find another way to teach your sections."
